In 1590, Felipe III charged the Italian, Leonardo Torriani with the task of constructing edifices in order to protect the island from the assault of pirates. Thus, he created El Puente de Las Bolas and El Castillo de San Gabriel . Previously there stood a fort at this very site, but it was burned by a pirate named Arraez Amurat, before he attacked the island. Then, in 1972, it was restored and transformed into what it is today, El Museo Arqueologico y Etnografico . (Visiting hours: Monday to Friday 8am to 3pm. Telephone: 928 811 950).
In 1779, El Castillo de San Jos was built and is where the International Museum of Contemporary Art stands today. The Museum regularly organizes an exhibition of the works of recognized painters of the 20 th century.
One can also visit the renowned houses of Lanzarote s capital, which are excellent examples of residential architecture. You can see exhibitions at La Casa de La Cultura or Casa Agustin de La Hoz situated in La Avenida Generalisimo Franco . (Opening hours: from 9am to 1pm and from 5pm to 10pm).
There s also La Casa de Los Arroyo which was built in 1793 by the military governor of Lanzarote, Colonel Domingo Armas Bethencourt . Presently there is a permanent exhibition regarding the scientist, Blas Cabrera Felipe.
An ideal place to enjoy a pleasant walk is El Charco de San Gines. It is surrounded by quaint fishermen's houses and has quite a dramatic lighting at night. The parish Church of San Gines is also a must-see, being a symbol of the capital's history. Enjoy splendid acoustics there as well.
