What to see

What was a hermitage from 1699, the parish church of Nuestra Se de la Caridad underwent reformation on various occasions, until it became the church that we know today.

Built in the early 17 th century, the church of San Marcial , situated in Femes, has the characteristics of popular island architecture. It was raised as a parish in 1818. The tower La Torre del Aguila , or de Las Coloradas , situated nearby Playa Blanca , built in the 18 th century, is the only defense structure erected in the south of Lanzarote .

In the town of Yaiza are surroundings and places of exceptional natural beauty: Several spots should not be missed by the tourist. There is Los Hervideros, caves wherein the waves of the sea seem to boil in fury, for they crash over the caves with such force. An enchanting sight is El Golfo , which is the cone of a volcano that has in its interior an emerald colored lagoon. Its name comes from the shellfish that used to dwell in its waters. And then there s the fast rising Las Salinas del Janubio. In the past, it used to be the most important source of income for the island. Today, its traditional method of extracting salt from the seawater is in the process of being revitalized.
