San Bartolome

Nestled in the middle of the island of Lanzarote , the inhabitants of San Bartolome called the place Ajei , which means 'small township.' At present, it has a museum that exhibits the crafts and various apparatus of the islanders from the times of yore. Of special note is the creation of international artist Cesar Manrique , the impressive El Monumento del Campesino .

The settling of the population in this area was due to the withdrawal of the people from coastal areas during the times that pirates attacked them, as they searched for more secure places. It served as a refuge place for islanders confronted by the invasions of the vicious buccaneers.
The most important festivals of the town are the municipality's festival, La Fiesta de San Bartolome , on the 24th of August, and the festivals of Playa Honda at the end of the summer, a perfect ender to the holiday getaway.

The Christmas holidays are regarded with much importance, due to the folklore, the depiction of the nativity scene and the Christmas carols that have been adapted to the local Canarian music.
