The Santa Barbara Castle
The Santa Barbara Castle can be found on the Guanapay Mountain, overlooking Teguise . It was built by Sancho de Herrera in the 16 th century as a watchtower for the coastline of the islands. It was in 1588 that Leonardo Torriani , an Italian engineer under the command of King Felipe II, converted it into a fortress. The castle suffered from a long period of deterioration until the 1960s, when a group of people known as friends of the castle took charge of the first restoration. Then in 1977, the Fine Arts association followed through the restorations that the other group had already started.
In 1989, the Restoration Department of Teguise made the final renovations to restore Torriani s original design. Most of the documents concerning Canarian emigration to America like passports, postcards, family letters and things alike are stored in this castle -museum. The interior of the castle was recently renovated and made into a museum of Canarian emigrants. The Santa Barbara Castle is located in Castillo de Guanapay. Montaña de Guanapay, Teguise.
