Lanzarote has some must see places to make your stay more complete. Some remarkable places include museums, plantations and recreational areas where everyone can enjoy.
National Park of Timanfaya
Timanfaya is a natural park predominated by a volcanic field and various species of plants. The park serves as a living laboratory of scientific, geologic and geomorphic interest. The region was said to have been devastated by volcanic eruptions for a period of six years, from 1730 to 1736, and during the 19 th century. A travel guide can take you to the volcanic fields and would show you its geothermal phenomena. Aside from Temanfaya s geothermic and scientific spectacles, the park also has a restaurant named El Diablo that serves the local cuisines and specialties of the island, cooked with geothermal heat!
The national park of Temanfaya is situated in Yaiza and offers a bar and cafeteria to the visitors. They are open Mondays to Sundays, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. With phone numbers: 928 840 056 / 928 840 057.
Jameos Del Agua
Jameos del Agua is an astounding series of connecting caves and grottoes. It is located at the northern part of Lanzarote, at the foot of the volcano Monte de la Corona that erupted 3,000 ears ago.
Jameos means bubble of lava and it is formed when a tunnel ceiling collapses due to accumulated gas which then leads to an explosion, or, when its width exceeds 20 meters.
In 1968 the renowned national artist Cesar Manrique artistically developed the Jameos del Agua for viewing. A winding staircase takes the visitors into a roofless volcanic bubble of 100 meters long and 30 meters wide, which is known as the Jameo del Grande . From that place, the visitor is then taken to a large garden with a swimming pool. A dance floor and two bars are situated in the rock formation which makes for an alternative and hip nightclub. A concert cave can be found at the end of Jameo del Grande which can seat about 600 spectators. The natural formation contributes to the concert cave s magnificent acoustics, making it an ideal venue for concerts and ballet performances.
At the foot of the cave is a stage which is the newest extension recently opened to the public. This extension is called the Jameo de la Cazuela.
The Jameos de la Agua is situated in Carretar de Orzola and its doors are open from Mondays to Sundays 9:30 to 19:00 hours. Tuesdays, Friday and Saturday from 19:00 to 02:00 hours. Services offered include a bar and a restaurant open from 13:00 to 15:30 and from 20:00 to 23:30 hours. With phone number: 928 848 020.
El Golfo
El Golfo is a semicircular crater that opens to the sea and formed from volcanic eruptions during the 1730s. A lagoon fills the base of the crater which makes it a spectacular natural formation. The sea, which is connected underground, passes through a crater, forming a beautiful black beach, in magnificently striking contrast with the green lagoon. The lake is a natural reserve and hence the authorities prohibit anyone from bathing. It is located in the municipality of Yaiza . A few miles away is the village of El Golfo , which offers various restaurants, facing the sea.
Cueva De Los Verdes
The Cueva de los Verdes form part of a system of underground grottoes and they are considered as one of the longest volcanic galleries in the world, a total of 6 kilometers. The cave formations were caused by a prehistoric eruption of Monte Corona , when a stream of lava flowed towards the east coast and into the sea. According to history, during the 17 th century the caves were used as refuge from pirates and slave hunters. The caves and tunnels of Cueva De Los Verdes are now one of the major sights of the place. Lights were added to lend a theatrical effect to the passages. Cueva de los Verdes is located in Haira and is open Monday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 hours.
C Manrique Foundation
The C Manrique Foundation is the island s center for artistic excellence. It houses not only Manrique s art works but also his personal collection of various works by famous artists such as Picasso and other world known artists. The foundation is one of the artist s major creations -- he managed to put together the essence of mixed media, from sculpture to painting and landscape, into a breathtaking place which somehow also acts as a museum. This architectural marvel also offers to the visitors a bar and a cafeteria. It is located in Tahiche and is open from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information and reservations, you can contact telephone numbers 928 843 138 / 928 843 070; Fax 928 843 463.
Mirador Del Rio
The Mirador del Rio is a tourist attraction situated in the northern part of the island, in front of the Famara cliff, 600 meters above sea level. The del Rio lookout offers various panoramic viewpoints of the landscape and the sea. Its circular window opens to a view of the lovely sea and the major islets surrounding the premises of the island. If you don t want to be contained, the walkway around the building or the terrace that tops the lookout is an alternative place to observe Lanzarote in a bird s eye view perspective. Services offered in Mirador del Rio include a cafeteria and a bar. Mirador del Rio is located on the road to Yé, Haría and its d oors are open Mondays to Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
